Local community leader, Claudia Stravato has been honored in Washington D.C. with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Community Health Leaders Award for her work with local Planned Parenthood and Panhandle Family Planning and Health Centers.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation established the Community Health Leaders Award to recognize individuals who overcome daunting obstacles to improve health and health care in their communities.
Despite overwhelming opposition from an ultra-conservative community, Planned Parenthood continued to thrive and grow under Stravato’s leadership. Now, as the Texas Panhandle Family Planning and Health Centers, they have expanded services to primary care, mid-life services, and even male health care.
On accepting the award Stravato said, “When kids are having kids, there are serious consequences for society, including child abuse and a continuing cycle of poverty. I hope this award will help to shed light on this crisis and motivate the public and policy-makers to address this issue realistically.”
